PTTEP investigates and develops CCS projects to support the goal of zero greenhouse gas emissions

PTTEP has initiated the study and development of a carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) project for the first time in Thailand. This project was implemented as part of the Arthit project in the Gulf of Thailand to achieve the goal of zero greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to investigating the feasibility of CCS projects in other regions, it supports the country’s carbon emission reduction goals.

Mr. Montree Lawanchaikul, Managing Director of PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP), revealed that with Thailand announcing its intention at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) meeting of state parties to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065, PTTEP is committed to participating in managing greenhouse gas and global warming issues. Therefore, the company has set goals and operating plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050 through the EP Net Zero 2050 concept. This aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from oil production processes. With the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, which is a technology that many countries see as key in reducing carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

PTTEP has started the study and development of the CCS project at the Arthit project in the Gulf of Thailand in 2021. This is the first CCS project development initiative in Thailand. A feasibility study covering the initial investigation and assessment of the carbon storage capacity in the underground rock layers has now been completed. The design aspects of the capture and containment process, the project plans to drill wells for storage, etc. and is currently undergoing a Pre-FEED study. PTTEP plans to begin using CCS technology in the Arthit project in 2026.

“PTTEP believes that the geological and petroleum engineering knowledge and experience in exploration and production can be very useful in the development of the CCS project.

Objectives In addition to the development of the CCS project in the Arthit gas field that PTTEP will operate for the first time in Thailand, we have also been working with partners who have experience in the development of CCS projects in Japan in the study and development of CCS in other areas of Thailand to help various industries reduce their carbon dioxide emissions, including the study and development of the CCS Hub Model project, which is a collaboration within the PTT Group for the reduction of emissions from industries in the PTT Group and industries in neighboring regions also by carrying out all of these operations, it will contribute to effectively supporting the achievement of Thailand’s goal of zero net greenhouse gas emissions.

However, the success of CCS is possible. Other relevant elements such as policy, law, investment promotion factors, and communication and public education need to be supported by the government and many organizations to push and promote the adoption of CCS technology in Thailand with concrete targets,” said Mr. Montri.

The CCS development project is one of the implementation plans. To support the energy transition to become a low-carbon organization and create sustainable growth in the future, PTTEP is also interested in various renewable energy projects. Future projects such as hydrogen include carbon capture and utilization (CCU)…..
