Boys and Girls Scout uniforms are expensive;the state should subsidize them

June 30, 2022 reported, the Permanent Secretary of the Home Office, had signed a letter on “Wearing Boys and Girls Scouts Uniforms” which called for a moratorium Uniform provision to ease parents’ expense burden. It is recommended that if any parents are unable to provide uniforms for their children due to poverty, the governors of the provinces should provide assistance. Regarding this issue, the reporter conducted a survey of many schools in Khon Kaen City, especially in Ban Non Chai Municipal School, and found that most parents agreed with their children to join the Scout class, but hoped to reduce the requirement for uniforms to be discussed in order to reduce the burden on parents. .

Ms. Pattanasri Jitbuntham, a 64-year-old from Khon Kaen province, said Scout uniforms were still required for teaching and learning, but she asked for less equipment. She personally does not think that wearing a scout uniform is a burden on her to keep children from participating, because scouting is a discipline that instills self-sacrifice and discipline in children, and they will be more responsible in the future, and she hopes her children will learn selflessness spirit and will proudly study in a Scout uniform.

She said, “Agreed that the kids wear uniforms because uniforms give them a sense of pride. But want to cut down on some gear and accessories like hats, brooches or embroidered badges. Cut down on these things, they’re still a disciplined team and that’s enough relief part of the burden.”

Ms Somsong Supadkham, 46, said she admitted this year’s scout clothing was very expensive. In previous years, a set was about 500-600 baht. This year, it rose to 700-800 baht. Her eldest daughter has grown up and needs to wear a larger uniform, so she bought a new set. But she knows some people wear old uniforms handed down from their elders to keep costs down, or they don’t buy a full set to keep their expenses down a bit.

She said: “As to whether the government’s announcement to subsidize the purchase of school uniforms is enough, I can tell you that it is not enough. The cost of clothing per student is about 2,000-3,000 baht for a semester to start, but the government’s subsidy is only 360 baht. So She hopes the media can help call on the government to increase related funding.”

Ms Somsong further said that schools should also think for parents to discuss what is required and what can be exempted to reduce the burden on each family. But she still does not object to the symbolic meaning of the need for uniforms to be worn by groups, she just feels that low-income families have to bear a heavy burden every year; every time a child goes to school, the clothing needs to be added, and the more equipment is needed to get a high score. It is hoped that the relevant authorities will seriously assist parents to cut unnecessary expenses.
