Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will raise maximum price for BTS Green Line

Wednesday, July 29, 20022 Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok together with members of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) met with Mr. Saree Aongsomwang, Secretary General of the Thailand Consumer Council (TCC), to discuss matters related to the BTS Green Line system. The TCC expressed concern about the maximum fare of 59 baht for the entire line, and urged the BMA to apply a lower fare grid to ease the pressure on users.

In response to the Thailand Consumer Council’s proposals, the Bangkok governor explained that the maximum fare of 59 baht was only a temporary measure because the BMA is still calculating the expenses it will incur once the BTS Green Line extension is fully completed. The governor said the BMA should consider fairness to those who do not travel by rail and also consider the investment that could have been used to help the community in other areas.

The Bangkok governor also discussed with other parties the difficulties of revising the BTS Green Line contract, due to the fact that the 2029-2042 operating contract was entered into with non-changeable contractual obligations. The governor also said that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will review the contract to ensure transparency and find a way to reduce the contract duration.

Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt said further discussions will be conducted with Krungthep Thanakom Co, a government-owned company under the BMA, and believes the issue should be resolved by next week.
