The U.S. defeated Thailand in FIVB Women’s Worlds

At the 2022 FIVB Women’s World Championship on Saturday in Lodz, Poland, Team USA battled back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Thailand 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-19, 27-25, 15-13).

Already assured of a spot in the knockout stage, Karch Kiraly’s squad concluded the second round in second position, behind only Serbia.

The Americans blundered their way through the first few minutes of the game at Atlas Arena, giving their opponents an early advantage. However, Thailand won the first two sets because to Kokram Pimpichaya, who scored 20 points and led the team in scoring.

The Americans eventually got going and turned the game around, outplaying Thailand in offense and blocking.

Chiaka Ogbogu and Haleigh Washington, two middle blocks, figured out a strategy for countering the Thai front line.

With the momentum on their side, Kiraly’s team were able to force a tie-break. The deciding set was a nail-biter, but the United States came out on top. Kara Bajema, serving from the outside, smashed a spike across the net to give her team a 14-13 lead. Bajema’s powerful serve in the following game set up Lauren Carlini for the winning counterattack that ended the match.

In all honesty, Chiaka Ogbogu and I have been making concerted efforts throughout the entire tournament to make ourselves as available as possible and to focus on being in solid blocking positions. As the 27-year-old Washington put it in an interview with the competition’s official site, “I’m just delighted that we managed to pull it off, final game in pool play.

First-placed Saturday’s 25-20, 25-21, and 25-23 victory over Turkey increased Serbia’s winning streak to nine matches. Neither of these teams will be eliminated. Tijana Boskovic, the 2018 World Championship Most Valuable Player, scored 23 points to lead her team to victory.

Poland defeated Germany, 3-2, in the evening play at Atlas Arena in Lodz (26-24, 20-25, 25-18, 26-28, 15-10). The squad captained by Stefano Lavarini finished in fourth place in Pool F and advanced to the knockout stage.
