Thailand Tourism Authority Partners with Tourism Cares for Sustainability

In a bid to promote sustainability in Thailand’s tourism sector, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has joined hands with Tourism Cares, a US-based non-profit organization dedicated to advancing sustainability in travel and tourism. This partnership, announced on March 17, 2024, underscores a shared commitment to harnessing the positive impacts of travel on society, the environment, and the economy.

TAT’s sustainable tourism initiatives, such as STARS, CF Hotels, Green Leaves, and Thailand Tourism Awards (TTA), aim to encourage local suppliers to adopt sustainable practices. Through its collaboration with Tourism Cares, TAT seeks to gain insights into the preferences of US travelers regarding sustainable travel, thereby enhancing offerings to cater to conscious travelers’ needs.

The collaboration comes at a time when Thailand is witnessing a significant increase in US tourists, with approximately 930,000 visitors welcomed in 2023. These travelers are increasingly seeking authentic experiences that engage with local communities.

Looking ahead to 2024, TAT anticipates a substantial tourism revenue from both international and domestic markets, ranging from approximately 1.54 to 1.92 billion Baht and 0.86 to 1.08 billion Baht, respectively, under the base case scenario.

To facilitate sustainable travel experiences, TAT has contributed to the Tourism Cares Meaningful Travel Map of Thailand, featuring vetted, sustainable organizations making positive impacts in destinations. The map serves as a valuable resource for both travel trade professionals and environmentally conscious travelers.

John Sutherland, Senior Director of Community Impact at Tourism Cares, expressed excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing Thailand’s pivotal role in regional sustainability efforts. He highlighted the recent Tourism Cares Meaningful Travel FAM with Thailand, which showcased the potential for sustainable tourism in the country.

From March 6-14, 2024, TAT and Tourism Cares organized the “Tourism Cares Meaningful Travel FAM with Thailand,” providing representatives from various tourism sectors with immersive experiences in Bangkok and Krabi.

Sustainability in travel also extends to transportation, with TAT continuing its partnership with Delta Air Lines and Korean Air. This collaboration aims to provide US travelers with seamless and responsible travel options to Thailand, integrating luxury with sustainability.

The collaboration announcement was accompanied by an educational session at the Peninsula Bangkok Hotel, focusing on crafting sustainable Thailand trips tailored to the US travel market. The session featured presentations and panel discussions led by key industry figures, fostering dialogue and networking opportunities among participants.
