Thailand, South Korea Strengthen Defense Ties

Thailand and South Korea have recently engaged in discussions to fortify their defense cooperation, with Thai Defence Minister Sutin Klungsang and South Korea’s Defence Minister Shin Won-sik leading a high-level meeting. The dialogue primarily revolved around the potential collaboration with South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Programme Administration (DAPA), a pivotal agency responsible for defense projects and industry advancement.

During the talks, Minister Sutin emphasized Thailand’s eagerness to leverage South Korea’s cutting-edge defense industry capabilities. He highlighted existing collaborative endeavors, such as the procurement of South Korean frigates and combat aircraft, as well as South Korea’s participation in Thailand’s Cobra Gold military exercises.

Established in 2006 within the South Korean Ministry of National Defence, DAPA assumes a crucial role in bolstering defense capabilities, overseeing munitions procurement, and fostering the defense industry’s growth. Minister Sutin’s visit to South Korea, spanning from March 27-30, aimed at delving deeper into these defense ties and exploring avenues for further mutual benefits in the defense sector.

Additionally, Minister Shin expressed gratitude for Thailand’s Little Tigers battalion’s contributions during the Korean War (1950-53), underscoring their pivotal role in securing peace on the Korean peninsula and fostering South Korea’s subsequent prosperity. He acknowledged Thailand as one of the 22 nations that supported South Korea under the United Nations banner during this historic conflict.
