Thailand is solidifying its position as a leader in the future food industry, guided by the Ministry of Commerce’s initiative to promote innovative, safe, traceable, and eco-friendly products. This collaborative effort between the government and private sector aims to leverage agricultural products as a new economic engine, meeting the rising global demand for healthier and sustainable food choices.
The future food sector in Thailand encompasses functional, medical, organic, and alternative protein categories. In 2023, exports from these sectors totaled 143 billion baht, with functional foods and ingredients constituting a significant 89.7% share. Key export markets include the United States, Vietnam, China, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
Recent figures indicate robust growth, with exports reaching 51.6 billion baht in the first four months of this year. Once again, functional foods led the exports, comprising 90.8% of the total. To support this burgeoning sector, the Thai Product Standards Organization (TPSO) and Thai Food Association (TFA) are developing a ‘future food dashboard’ on the Trade Intelligence System website. This tool will furnish entrepreneurs and the public with crucial trade data for informed decision-making and strategic planning.
The government’s commitment to bolstering the future food industry underscores its dedication to well-being, sustainability, and innovation. By aligning with emerging global trends, Thailand aims to foster substantial economic growth and reinforce its status as a pivotal player in the international food market.
