Krabi Bays Closing for Rehabilitation During Monsoon Season

Maya Bay, a renowned tourist spot in Krabi, along with Loh Samah Bay and Lo Ko Bay, will undergo a temporary closure for natural rehabilitation starting August 1, 2024. The closure will last until September 30, 2024, as announced by Yutthaphong Dumsrisuk, the chief of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park, on Friday.

This measure aims to facilitate the bays’ recovery during the monsoon season and ensure visitor safety amid the region’s hazardous weather conditions. The monsoon brings strong winds and high waves, which can create dangerous situations, particularly at Ao Loh Samah Pier, the main entry point to Maya Bay. Tour boats will be unable to dock during this period, further reinforcing the need for the temporary closure, Mr. Yutthaphong explained.

From October 1, 2023, to July 22, 2024, Maya Bay attracted 1,683,430 visitors, generating approximately 549.86 million baht in revenue for the national park. In July 2023, the park collected around 23 million baht from 110,436 visitors. This July, despite a decrease in visitor numbers to 96,236, the park’s revenue increased to about 34.74 million baht due to enhanced fee collection practices.

The Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park has stated that other sections of the park will remain accessible to tourists during the closure. Visitors seeking further details can contact park officials at 075 65 6150 or through the park’s Facebook page.
