Bangkok Tests New Flood Barriers at Ratchaworadit Pier

On August 30, 2024, Bangkok conducted a test installation of 50 prefabricated flood barriers, known as HYDRO FENCE, at Ratchaworadit Pier in the Phra Nakhon District. The test, led by Mr. Suphamit Laithong, Deputy Director of the Drainage and Sewerage Office, marks a significant step in the city’s efforts to combat rising water levels in the Chao Phraya River. The installation revealed a notable reduction in both installation time and the need for traditional sandbag barriers.

Previously, managing floodwaters at this heavily trafficked pier required a labor-intensive process of arranging sandbags, which had to be adjusted with the ebb and flow of the tides. This method demanded substantial manpower and constant monitoring. However, the newly tested prefabricated barriers demonstrated that they could be installed quickly and efficiently, reducing the reliance on sandbags.

Bangkok currently has approximately 32 boat ramps along the Chao Phraya River, and the success of this trial could lead to the expansion of the HYDRO FENCE system to other flood-prone areas in the city. This innovation is part of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s broader strategy to enhance flood prevention measures.

As Bangkok prepares for potential flooding, the Central Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command (DDPM) has coordinated with 10 central provinces, including Bangkok, to closely monitor the water situation. Authorities are particularly focused on low-lying areas outside the main embankment and are urging residents along the Chao Phraya River to remain vigilant. Public relations campaigns have been launched to notify affected communities about the rising water levels and the need to move belongings to higher ground.

In addition to the installation of flood barriers, local administrative organizations and relevant agencies are inspecting existing flood prevention infrastructure to ensure its strength. Disaster relief materials, equipment, and machinery have been prepared to respond to emergencies around the clock, ensuring that assistance can be provided swiftly if needed.

This coordinated effort highlights Bangkok’s commitment to improving its flood management capabilities and protecting its residents from the impacts of rising water levels.
