Bangkok’s newly upgraded BRT-EV line, connecting Sathorn to Ratchaphruek, officially commenced operations on September 1, 2024, offering free rides to passengers for the initial two months. The revamped bus rapid transit system is a key development in the city’s public transportation network, powered entirely by electric energy, promising a quieter and more environmentally friendly commute.
The launch of the BRT-EV line follows a competitive bidding process initiated by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), aimed at enhancing the city’s rapid transit system. Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited (BTSC) emerged as the winning bidder and has been awarded a five-year contract to operate the line. The new electric buses are designed with ramps to facilitate access for passengers with disabilities, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity. Payments for rides can be made using Rabbit cards or QR code scans via mobile phones, as ticket counters have been eliminated at the stations.
The BRT-EV line, running daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, will offer free services from September 1 to October 31, 2024. The service includes two new stations: Chan Nuea Road Station, located near the Chan-Narathiwat intersection, and Chan Tai Road Station, near the Ratchada-Narathiwat intersection. With these additions, the BRT line now features 14 stations, strategically connecting key areas across Bangkok.
The expanded and modernized BRT system represents a significant advancement in Bangkok’s public transportation infrastructure, aiming to provide a more efficient and sustainable mode of travel for both residents and visitors. The official BTS Facebook page marked the launch by sharing images of the first day of service, highlighting the updated features of the BRT-EV buses.
In attendance at the launch event were key officials from the BMA and BTSC, alongside representatives from private companies involved in the project.
