BANGKOK (NNT) – Newly appointed Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has announced that he will review the annual military reshuffle and a controversial submarine deal with China before making any final decisions. Phumtham, who recently took over the role, emphasized the importance of considering both public and military opinions in these matters.
The submarine deal, initiated by his predecessor Sutin Klungsang, involves the acquisition of a Chinese-made S26T Yuan-class submarine valued at 13.5 billion baht. The purchase hit a roadblock when the Chinese supplier was unable to provide the agreed-upon German-made engine, instead proposing a Chinese alternative. Phumtham indicated that this issue would be reassessed in light of the change in circumstances.
In addition to the submarine deal, the Defense Minister is also overseeing the delayed military reshuffle, which has been held up by disagreements regarding the appointment of a new navy chief. He has held discussions with the outgoing navy chief, Admiral Adung Phan-iam, and plans to move forward with the reshuffle following further consultation with senior military officials.
Phumtham underscored that, as he familiarizes himself with the intricacies of defense and military affairs, he will approach critical decisions such as high-level appointments and strategic military procurements with caution and care.
