Bangkok to Transform Phra Khanong and Bang Na for Pedestrians

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has announced plans to transform the Phra Khanong and Bang Na districts into pedestrian-friendly zones as part of a broader initiative to promote healthier and greener urban living. Unveiled on Sunday, 15 September, by Deputy Bangkok Governor Tavida Kamolvej during an event at Ban Jirayu-Poonsup Library, the project forms part of the Walk-Ride-Run campaign. This initiative is organised in collaboration with Chulalongkorn University’s Urban Design and Development Centre (UDDC) and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth).

The strategy focuses on enhancing public spaces by creating designated ‘Good Walk’ zones, encouraging walking, running, and cycling as primary forms of transport. These zones are intended to leverage the robust public transport network in the Phra Khanong and Bang Na districts, making it easier for residents to reduce car use. Tavida highlighted that this pilot programme is a key step in the city’s long-term mission to boost liveability and foster a cleaner environment.

To showcase their vision, UDDC and ThaiHealth held various activities on Sunday morning, beginning at 7am. Residents were invited to participate in fitness activities tailored to different levels. Walkers covered a 2-kilometre route, passing through notable landmarks such as Iam Sombat Market and Suan Ploen Phakhanong Park. Cyclists rode 20 kilometres, while runners took on a 12-kilometre course through key areas including Udomsuk Road and True Digital Park.

This initiative signals a growing shift in Bangkok’s urban planning towards more pedestrian-focused developments, encouraging residents to adopt healthier, more sustainable lifestyles. The move aligns with the city’s broader efforts to enhance the liveability of its urban spaces. Further developments are expected as the programme progresses, with potential expansion into other districts.

Deputy Governor Tavida, alongside officials from the BMA, UDDC, and ThaiHealth, reaffirmed their commitment to improving Bangkok’s infrastructure to promote a more active and eco-friendly way of life.
