Government approves 3 billion baht flood relief fund

The Thai government has approved a flood relief fund of 3 billion baht, now ready for immediate deployment to assist those affected by recent flooding. The announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who emphasized the urgency of utilizing these funds without the hindrance of bureaucratic delays.

The fund’s distribution will adhere to existing regulations to ensure that it is managed efficiently. Phumtham directed key agencies, including the Secretariat of the Prime Minister, the Budget Bureau, and the Ministry of Finance, to review the criteria for additional assistance within a week. This review aims to establish a more effective framework for future relief efforts, addressing the limitations of current standards.

In his remarks, Phumtham expressed gratitude towards military personnel who are actively aiding flood-affected areas, noting their dedication even in the face of personal hardships caused by the flooding. He assured them that any concerns regarding their welfare would be promptly addressed.

Additionally, Phumtham and his team discussed strategies to enhance support for affected military personnel, indicating plans to reconvene for further discussions. They are seeking legal solutions to ensure the necessary assistance is provided, underscoring the government’s commitment to both the public and its service members during this challenging time.
