Ratchathewi Overpass Removal for MRT Construction Scheduled

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has announced plans to begin dismantling the Ratchathewi overpass on January 17, 2025, as part of the Orange Line MRT extension project between Bang Khunnon and the Thailand Cultural Centre. The construction, set to take place 24/7 until April 30, 2028, aims to facilitate the new Ratchathewi underground station (OR08) at the intersection of Phetchaburi and Phaya Thai Roads.

To minimize disruption, the MRTA, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), and traffic police have developed a traffic management plan. Recommendations include alternative routes and the introduction of shuttle buses to reduce congestion and provide commuters with additional options. Traffic during the closure will be limited to two inbound and outbound lanes on Phetchaburi Road.

Three alternative routes have been outlined for drivers:

  1. Si Rat Expressway via Yommarat – From Nakhon Sawan Road, turn right at Nang Loeng Junction, take Phitsanulok Road, and enter the Si Rat Expressway at Yommarat. Exit at Rama IX Road to reach Petch Uthai and rejoin Phetchaburi Road.
  2. Sri Ayutthaya Road – Drivers traveling east from Nakhon Sawan Road can turn at Nang Loeng Junction, take Phitsanulok Road, and proceed to Rama VI Road via Uruphong Junction. From there, continue to Sri Ayutthaya and Rama IX Roads.
  3. Ratchadamnoen Nok Road – Vehicles from Ratchadamnoen Nok can turn at the equestrian statue onto Sri Ayutthaya Road. Continue via Wat Bencha Junction to Rama V and Ratchawithi Roads, passing Victory Monument and Din Daeng to connect with Rama IX Road.

The dismantled Ratchathewi overpass will be replaced with a new structure, set for completion in December 2026 and reopening by April 2028. Meanwhile, other related projects, such as the removal of the Charan Sanitwong overpass, have progressed smoothly since January 6, 2024, with the Pratunam overpass scheduled for removal by March 2026 as the final phase.

Officials emphasized their commitment to addressing any challenges promptly during construction. The project involves collaboration with key stakeholders, including Ch. Karnchang Public Company Limited and Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited.
