“Ban Puea Kon Thai” Project Attracts Overwhelming Public Interest

Thai citizens have shown remarkable interest in the newly launched “Ban Puea Kon Thai” (Houses for Thais) initiative, with over 60 million visits recorded on the project’s official website within just four days of its launch on January 17, 2025. This government-backed housing scheme aims to improve public access to affordable homes.

Government spokesman Jirayu Huangsab noted the widespread enthusiasm for the initiative, underscored by the significant engagement across social media. A TikTok video showcasing three sample room designs garnered over 1 million views, demonstrating the strong demand for affordable housing options.

The official website, managed by the Transport Ministry, addresses eligibility criteria and provides comprehensive details about the program. The pilot phase focuses on four strategic locations: Chiang Mai, Pathum Thani, Thon Buri, and Bangkok’s Kilometre 11 area along Vibhavadi Road. Among these, the Kilometre 11 site has seen the highest participation, with 156,857 applications out of a total of 226,499 received across all sites.

As of January 20, 135,255 applicants passed the initial qualification phase conducted by the Government Housing Bank (GH Bank). Reservations for the program will remain open until January 31, 2025.

The project offers long-term leases facilitated by the State Railway of Thailand, with monthly instalments set at an affordable rate of 4,000 baht and no down payment required. This initiative primarily targets first-time buyers, particularly young professionals. Eligibility criteria include Thai citizenship, a minimum age of 20, an income of no more than 50,000 baht per month, and no prior ownership of housing, including properties under earlier “Ban Puea Kon Thai” projects. Additionally, homes purchased under this scheme cannot be transferred to another owner within five years of registration.

Highlighting the broader vision of the project, Mr. Jirayu emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding the scheme nationwide, covering regions in northern, northeastern, central, and southern Thailand, as well as Bangkok and its surrounding areas. The program aligns with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s agenda to enhance the quality of life for Thai citizens and bolster national development.
