PM Paetongtarn Launches Empowering Thais TV Program

BANGKOK – On February 2, 2025, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra introduced the inaugural episode of her new television program, Empowering Thais with PM Paetongtarn. The monthly program, airing on the first Sunday of each month, is designed to provide direct updates on government policies, progress, and ongoing challenges in Thailand. In the first broadcast, the Prime Minister covered topics including healthcare, economic policies, environmental efforts, and international trade.

During the episode, Paetongtarn confirmed the upcoming Phase 3 rollout of the 10,000 Baht Digital Wallet Scheme, addressing public feedback and emphasizing her commitment to transparent governance. “My greatest satisfaction is seeing our efforts translate into tangible benefits for the Thai people,” she stated.

Healthcare was a primary focus, with the expansion of the 30 Baht for All healthcare program, which now allows Thai citizens to access medical care at any hospital nationwide. The Prime Minister also discussed the return of the One District, One Scholarship (ODOS) program, which provides opportunities for students from rural areas to study abroad or attend international camps. The expanded program now offers eligibility to a broader group of students beyond academic top performers.

Another key initiative, Homes for Thais, aims to provide affordable housing for workers, a move seen as crucial for social stability and workforce productivity. Additionally, the Prime Minister highlighted the legalization of marriage equality in Thailand, marking a significant step forward for the country’s LGBTQ+ rights, providing equal legal protections for same-sex couples.

International trade developments were also covered. Paetongtarn, who recently led Thailand’s delegation at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, reported that the country had secured a free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). This agreement is expected to open new export opportunities for Thai small and medium-sized enterprises and strengthen the country’s economic ties with Europe.

Environmental challenges, particularly the issue of PM2.5 air pollution, were also addressed. Paetongtarn emphasized the government’s response, including stricter enforcement of anti-burning laws and initiatives to expand public transportation, such as the free electric train program in Bangkok, which has helped reduce traffic congestion and emissions. She noted that regional cooperation with neighboring ASEAN countries is essential for effectively tackling the issue of air pollution.

The Prime Minister also discussed a new emergency decree targeting cybercrime, aimed at combating online scams and financial fraud. Under the legislation, banks and telecom companies are required to enhance their efforts in protecting citizens from cyber threats, including dismantling illegal antenna networks used in scam operations.

In closing, Paetongtarn invited the public to engage with the program, offering feedback and sharing their thoughts. She expressed hope that Empowering Thais will serve as a platform for transparency, providing the public with insights into government policies and decision-making. The next episode of the program is scheduled for early March 2025, where further updates on national policies and initiatives will be provided.

The program’s launch was attended by key government officials and members of the media, underscoring the importance of direct communication between the government and the Thai public.
