Prachuap Khiri Khan is advancing its efforts to combat drug abuse, reporting significant progress in its pilot project in Hua Hin. The provincial government has successfully treated drug users in all communities across seven sub-districts of Hua Hin as part of a three-month initiative that ran from November 1, 2023, to January 31, 2024. The project aims to improve public health and safety by providing rehabilitation and addressing drug trafficking.
On February 6, 2025, at the Provincial Hall in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Deputy Governor Kittipong Sukphakakul and Police Colonel Nakarin Sukonthawit, Acting Provincial Police Chief, presided over a meeting to review the progress of this initiative. The meeting included district officials, local leaders, and representatives from relevant agencies, all of whom discussed the outcomes and next steps.
The pilot program in Hua Hin resulted in 100% completion of its target: identifying and helping drug users in every community across seven sub-districts. In addition to the rehabilitation process, law enforcement also focused on cracking down on drug dealers in compliance with the law.
During the meeting, officials also reviewed the budget request for the upcoming fiscal year, planning for an extension of the project into seven other districts. These include Pranburi, Sam Roi Yot, Kui Buri, Muang, Thap Sakae, Bang Saphan, and Bang Saphan Noi. The extension will include a targeted search for drug users aged 14-65, with the goal of completion by July 28, 2025.
The meeting also highlighted some challenges encountered in the pilot project, particularly in Hua Hin’s urban areas, where some residents expressed concerns about privacy and the possibility of rights violations during random urine testing. Local authorities responded by offering clear explanations and using public awareness campaigns, including informational videos and outreach via community vehicles, to ensure greater cooperation from residents.
Deputy Governor Sukphakakul emphasized the importance of monitoring individuals who have undergone rehabilitation to ensure they do not relapse into drug use. He also urged the expanded efforts in the seven other districts to be thoroughly planned and effectively executed. Meanwhile, Police Colonel Sukonthawit instructed police investigators to collaborate closely with health officials at local health promotion hospitals, ensuring a comprehensive approach to both rehabilitation and identifying drug dealers.
With continued cooperation between law enforcement, local government, and health services, Prachuap Khiri Khan is aiming to make significant strides in reducing drug-related issues across the province.
