General Prawit has advocated preventative steps to reduce traffic fatalities

The Deputy Prime Minister, General Prawit Wongsuwan, has issued an order mandating a proactive strategy to increase road safety and decrease accidents.

Members of the National Road Accident Prevention and Reduction Policy Board met today under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan to discuss the results of implementing the new penalties for traffic offenses outlined in the Land Transport Act.

On September 5th, a new legislation went into force with the intention of reflecting drivers’ actual practices.

Offenders caught driving under the influence the first time face up to a year in prison and a fine of 5,000 to 20,000 baht; those caught a second and third time within a two-year period face up to two years in prison and a fine of 50,000 to 100,000 baht, in addition to a mandatory one-year license suspension.

The policy board during the meeting unanimously approved a proposal from the road safety administration center to designate January 21 as annual Road Users’ Safety Day. As a memorial to the pedestrian who was murdered by a negligent biker at a crossing in Bangkok on that date.

A draft road safety master plan for 2022-2027 was also agreed at the meeting, along with a proposal to reduce the number of accidents that happen on the roads during public holidays in 2023, especially around the New Year and Songkran holidays.
