Cambodia Accepts Thailand’s Preconditions for Peace Talks

Cambodia has reportedly accepted Thailand’s four preconditions to resume peace discussions, marking a potential breakthrough in efforts to stabilize relations between the neighboring countries. The agreement was discussed during a four-party meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, aimed at addressing tensions despite an existing ceasefire agreement.

The meeting brought together Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow and his Cambodian counterpart, Prak Sokhonn, who outlined the next steps toward de-escalation and cooperation. Thailand’s prime minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, had previously set four conditions for further dialogue: the withdrawal of heavy weaponry, joint demining operations, combating transnational crime, and collaboration in managing border areas.

According to the Khmer Times, Prak Sokhonn confirmed that both governments had agreed to prioritize actions designed to ease hostilities and foster stability. These include the removal of destructive weapons, humanitarian demining, stronger coordination against cross-border crimes, and improved management of civilian settlements in contested areas. He also mentioned joint efforts to counter misinformation and false reporting, a concern seen as contributing to recent diplomatic strains.

Prak reaffirmed Cambodia’s stance on peaceful conflict resolution, emphasizing respect for international law and fairness in negotiations. “Cambodia has consistently stood for the peaceful resolution of disputes,” he said, underscoring that while Cambodia seeks no territorial gain, it would not relinquish what it considers rightfully its own.

Also present at the discussions were Malaysia’s Interior Minister Saifuddin Ismail and a representative from the United States. The Thai foreign minister noted that the talks addressed unresolved matters and steps to reduce tensions, highlighting the progress made through existing bilateral mechanisms and the need to sustain dialogue for lasting peace.
